The Canigó school  celebrates the 10th edition of the speech contest for 6th grade students

The Canigó speech contest aims to teach students to prepare an argumentative speech on a topic, defend it orally, and convince or persuade others through the exclusive use of words.

The  Canigo School oratory contest, “Think, write and say it”, which has been held for 6th grade students for the last ten years, was started with the illusion of empowering them with fluency and oral expression.

Each 6th grade student defends some idea or topic that interests her, trying to convince the audience of their point of view.

The Canigó School Oratory Competition 2024

Nine students made it to the end of this edition and thanks to them, we have gotten to know closely interesting topics such as nuclear energy, its origin and its practical application; or the value of life of people with disabilities and the importance of improving their living conditions.

Also, what needs to be done to be a good leader; the importance of our language and how to properly use foreign words; knowing how to say “no” when necessary, in order to develop the capacity for commitment in what is important or how to overcome adversity. Other topics have been how to get the most benefit from artificial intelligence; practical applications of 3D printing in Medicine; and we have even discovered how a pet can feel and think.

What does the Canigó School Oratory contest consist of?

The oratory contest is an opportunity to prepare an argumentative speech about a topic and defend it orally. The goal is to convince or persuade their classmates, in three to five minutes, through the exclusive use of the word; without any type of visual support.

The preparation was done in phases: research information, outline their speech, practice their delivery, and finally argumentation with data and evidence in front of their peers. All using only the art of the spoken word.

The project ends with an oral presentation, whose framework is a speech contest in which all 6th grade students participate. From this presentation, finalists are selected.

The hand-picked finalists present their work in front of a special jury of educators and school parents. It is here where the three winners are chosen and receive the well-deserved prize.

Oratory skills are strengthened in this contest. Learning is improved through different parts of the process: decision making in choosing the topic, researching information and selecting evidence to support it.

Communication skills at Colegio Canigó

Starting in Preschool, in Canigó, through the project The game of Oratory, we seek to improve oral expression by recreating everyday situations within the classroom. Through play, girls and boys are introduced to the art of oratory. At all school stages, various innovative projects related to Public Speaking take place, and some of those are in English.
